Smart phones, tablets and computers, which are the gains of the modern age, are now available to people of all ages. It cannot be denied that these electronic devices are indispensable helpers of our lives. However, it has been revealed over the years that these tools have many harmful effects.
We can briefly examine these problems under four major headings.
ORTHOPEDIC PROBLEMS (especially back-spine problems)
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS (electronic addiction, communication disorders, attention deficits)
METABOLIC PROBLEMS (circulation problems and obesity due to immobility)
EYE HEALTH PROBLEMS
1-Disorders of refraction:
Chronic focusing on the close range increases the anterior-posterior diameter of the eye, causing myopic change in the eye. The worldwide increase in myopia frequency in recent years is attributed to the increased use of electronic devices.
Close distance activities such as homework and reading, and tablet use should be limited to certain periods.
If screen exposure is compulsory (such as online education), the screen should be rested and electronic items should never be used in the dark.
Eyes should be rested by looking away for 2-3 minutes every 20 minutes.
2-Accommodation problems, strabismus and double vision
In children and adults who constantly look at close range, the so-called “Accommodation SPASM” occurs as a result of over-stimulation of the muscles that allow the eyes to look inward and over-focusing of the eye lens.
These patients develop headache, double vision, and frequent crossing of eyes.
Reducing close focus is essential for treating the condition.
In advanced cases, it may be necessary to use eye drops to resolve this spasm by disrupting the close focus.
If close focus continues after treatment, the spasm recurs very quickly.
